Laser Quest article

Laser Quest - The Wiki description, the trev description is much simpler. It was a silly game where people shot each other with over grown TV remotes that made childish “Pew” noises. Some people, naming no names, took this all far too seriously.

LQX - Was the name for the kind of Laser Quest that we had, it was a newer version that was supposedly more cutting edge. For cutting edge read “Doesn’t work properly”

Score Screen - A dirty great big (for the time) PC monitor that showed scores and had a place for a message, more on this later.

Martyn - One of our colleagues, bless ‘im. It says a lot that the last I heard he is now a manager of a bowling alley. The rest of us aren’t…

(0898) RECTUM - This was something that we typed into the computer, not realising that it was being displayed on the score screen for the public. It wasn’t until sometime later that one of the regulars said “0898 RECTUM?” that Rob and I looked horrified at each other.

Brief - We had to explain to the punters what was going to happen and basic safety requirements. Some briefs lasted longer than others, but that is a post for another day…

Cap - As part of our uniform we had to wear a baseball cap. On a hot day it was very unpleasant, and we tried to wear it as little as we could. In fact when I left I burnt mine in the back garden.

FRONT COMMS FAILURE - The most regular failure on the packs, the CPU of the pack was in the gun, which of course was the most vulnerable part of the pack too, Design GENIUS! Anyway, when the CPU couldn’t connect with the front board on the body pack it gave this fail, unplugging the gun and replugging fixed it generally.

Threshold - The electronics people that actually made the packs, and in theory they fixed them. They didn’t. They were as much use as a Gary Glitter tribute act, and a lot more expensive.

Colour system - We often had queues for games when we were busy, so we had a simple colour system, and we would make a tannoy announcement for a relevant colour and everyone would turn up and play. That was the theory anyway. Ahh if only life were really like that.
